Preveli was once a hippy centre but in the 80s local authorities made way for more conventional beach goers. Plakias has a couple of bars and cafeterias but does not cater for nightlife dwellers. Plakias beach is one of the biggest in Crete and extends east of the village.
The Preveli monastery located in a picturesque setting dates back to the 16th or 17th century, and its church was destroyed by the Turks in 1867 but was restored by the monks in 1911.
