A feature of the town is a small lake in the centre of the town which is connected to the sea and is crossed by a small bridge. From Agios Nikolaos two interesting excursions can be arranged, one is to the traditional Cretan village of Kritsa and home to the 13th century Church of Panagia Kera and the other is to nearby Spinalonga which was once a 16th century Venetian fortress and later became a leper colony from the 1900s until 1957.
Agios Nikolaos is everything you could expect from a capital city, it is an incredibly picturesque port with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. It offers many restaurants, bars, shops and an exciting nightlife.
